"The physical and chemical properties of milt were studied for Cirrhinus mrigala, Labeo rohita, Cyprinus carpio (koi), Oreochromis mossambicus and red tilapia. The short-term preservation was done for C. mrigala and Cyprinus carpio (koi) milt. The colour of the milt was found to be creamy white for carp species and translucent for tilapiine species. Tilapiine species yielded greater quantities of semen than carp species. Among carp species, C. mrigala produced the highest mean volume (0.81 � 0. 26 ml) of milt, followed by L. rohita (0.56 � 0.30 ml) and C. carpio (koi) (0.36 � 0.33 ml). But the relative volume of milt was higher in C. carpio (koi) (2.30 � 2.20 ml/kg) compared to C. mrigala (1.00 � 0.14 ml/kg) and L. rohita (0.65 � 0.23 ml/kg). The high viscosity (1.44 � 0.40 Nsm-2) and sperm count (38.24 � 4.86 x 109cells/ml) values were recorded for L. rohita followed by C. mrigala (0.84 � 0.19 Nsm-2; 33.14 � 3.00x109 cells/ml), C. carpio (koi) (0.41 � 0.15 Nsm-2; 22.51 � 2.91x109 cells/ml, red tilapia (0.020 � 0.002 Nsm-2; 2.20 � 0.50x107 cells/ml) and O. mossambious (0.018 � 0.003 Nsm-2; 2.20 � 0.50x107 cells/ml). A linear relationship was found between viscosity and sperm count values. Tilapiine species showed longer durations of spermatozoan motility (approx. 1 hr) than carp species (<1 min). pH values of different fish species were found to be almost neutral (7.02 - 7.22). Compared to tilapiine species milt of carp species had higher levels of protein and total free sugars. Ten different extenders viz., Cortland medium, modified Cortland medium, Alsever's solution, Hfx #10, extender 1, extender 2, NaCl (310 mosm kg-1), KCl (310 mosm kg-1), KCl + KCl (155 + 155 mosm kg-1) and fish ringer were used for the short term preservation of C. mrigala and Cyprinus carpio (koi) milt. Among the ten extenders tested, extender 2 was found to be the best, extending the sperm viability upto 13 days for mrigal sperm and 17 days for koi carp sperm at 0-4�C and 9 days for mrigal sperm and 4 days for koi carp sperm at 6 - 9�C. Semen dilution ratios above 1:9 (semen : extender) were found to reduce sperm viability."
